<p> DIED. Juan Benet, 65, one of Spain's most important
contemporary novelists, who because of his expressive narrative
style was often likened to France's Marcel Proust, Ireland's
James Joyce and the U.S.'s William Faulkner; of cancer; in
Madrid. A civil engineer by profession, Benet wrote of the moral
ruin of Spain, winning the 1969 Biblioteca Breve prize for A
Meditation, which consists of a single 445-page paragraph, and
the 1984 Premio de la Critica for Rusty Lances, an ambitious
work about the Spanish Civil War.
